FALKEN TYRE TIPS & FAQS
Tyre care is essential to ensure your vehicle remains safe, efficient, and reliable on the road. Proper maintenance not only improves handling and fuel efficiency but also extends tyre life and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns. On this page, you’ll find helpful tyre tips and clear answers to frequently asked questions to keep you driving with confidence.
TYRE SELECTION & CARE
1. Check tyre pressure regularly: Properly inflated tyres reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency. Slight adjustments within the recommended range can further enhance performance.
2. Have wheel alignment checked: Proper wheel alignment ensures even tyre wear and minimizes rolling resistance, optimizing both tyre lifespan and fuel consumption. A yearly check is recommended.
3. Choose low rolling resistance tyres: Rolling resistance directly affects fuel consumption. High-quality tyres, such as those from Falken, are specifically designed to reduce rolling resistance and improve efficiency. Our flagship model, the e. ZIEX, excels in both low rolling resistance and high safety standards.
4. Use aerodynamic rims and hubcaps: Closed rims or special aerodynamic hubcaps can reduce air resistance, significantly improving overall energy efficiency in some cases.
At Falken, we focus on providing not only high-quality tyres with optimal performance but also expert advice to help you maximize their benefits through proper use and maintenance. Choosing the right tyres and adopting an efficient driving style benefits both your wallet and the environment.
ROTATION & WEAR
Falken recommends rotating your tyres at least every 8,000km and periodically inspecting your tyres to make sure they are free of road hazards (such as nails, screws, large wood splinters, etc.) that might penetrate your tyres causing them to lose air pressure and to ensure they are wearing evenly. Common irregular wear patterns are: misalignment wear, where the tyre shows excessive outer or inner tread wear. Tyre sidewalls should also be inspected for cuts, snags, bruises, and weather cracking. If any of these noted conditions are present during inspection, we recommend returning to your servicing tyre dealer to be corrected to ensure long tyre life.
Maintain your vehicle regularly: A well-maintained vehicle ensures optimal tyre performance. Electric vehicles also benefit from regular maintenance.
TYRE REPLACEMENT
Falken recommends replacing your tyres when the tread wears down to 1.6mm (legal limit is 1.5mm), which are located across the tread in several locations around the tire. If only two tyres are being replaced, the two new tyres should always be installed on the rear of the vehicle to aid in preventing your vehicle from hydroplaning, even if your car is front wheel drive.
It’s always recommended to have your new tyres balanced during installation, and alignment checked if the previous tyres show irregular wear. Tyres that have been in use for 5 years or more should continue to be inspected by a qualified tyre specialist, at least annually. It is recommended that any tyres 10 years old or older from the date of manufacture, including spare tyres, be replaced with new tyres as a precaution even if such tyres appear serviceable and even if they have not reached the legal worn out limit at 1.5mm.
In the event that you get a flat tyre while driving, it is best to find a nearby, safe place to stop and install your spare tyre or call a tow truck. The less distance that you drive on your low or flat tyre, the better chances your tyre has of being repairable. Once you are able to get to your local servicing tyre dealer, have them dismount the tyre from the rim and thoroughly inspect the inside of the tyre. If the interior of the tyre, inside and/or outside sidewall are compromised from driving on the flat or underinflated tyre for too long, the tyre should be replaced. If the tyre is deemed repairable after inspection, it should be repaired with a plug and patch or plug/patch combination to correctly repair the tyre. Never use a rope type plug, as this does not correctly seal the tyre, and may lead to tyre failure.
FUEL-EFFICIENCY
Proper Inflation & Fuel Economy
Ensure maximum performance and a long life from your tyres by checking the air pressures at least once a month and set them to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure(s) listed on the vehicle’s tyre placard or in your owner’s manual. Always check and adjust your air pressure when your tyres are cold, preferably first thing in the morning before driving. Never release air pressure from tyres when they are hot. Wait until the tyres cool down and recheck, adding air or releasing as required.
*Some plus size applications may require different air pressure(s) than what is listed on your vehicle’s placard or owner’s manual. In this case, please consult your tyre dealer or Falken Tyre for proper inflation pressure(s).
PLUS SIZING TYRES
Plus sizing your wheels and tyres is one of the easiest ways to dramatically change the looks of your vehicle. Falken recommends no more than a 3% +/- change in the replacement tyres’ overall diameter, so as to remain as close to O.E. specifications as possible and keep your vehicle’s odometer, speedometer, and anti-lock braking system (ABS) functioning correctly, as well as keeping sufficient ground clearance. On sport utility vehicles (SUV) and light trucks, any increase in tyre overall diameter and the lifting of vehicle suspension to accommodate the larger tyre size, may result in changes of vehicle ride height which will result in changes in rollover characteristics, braking distances, and handling. The plus sized tyre’s load index must also be equal to or greater than the O.E. tyres’ load index or be able to effectively carry load at a PSI listed on the Load and Inflation Table. Falken Tyre also recommends that the speed rating of the replacement tyres must always equal or exceed the original equipped tyres.
TYRE LOAD & SPEED RATING
What are tyre load and speed ratings?
The load index is a numerical code indicating the maximum load a tyre can carry. The load depends on the speed indicated by the tyres speed symbol, the actual maximum speed and any special features of the vehicle model under the service conditions specified by the tyre manufacturer.
The speed symbol shows the maximum speed permitted for the tyre under load as per the load index and the manufacturer’s instructions.
For example “101 Y” would indicate 825kg and 300KM/H respectively.
TYRE AIR PRESSURE
Improper inflation
Tyres that are under inflated will exhibit both shoulders of the tread wearing down at a faster rate, while overinflated tyres will have the center tread area wearing down at a faster rate.
Correct tyre pressures for your vehicle can be found on the tyre placard located in the inside of the driver’s side door or vehicle owner’s manual. Tyre pressures should be set when the tyre is cold as pressures increase when the tyre has been driven.
Tyre pressure should be checked weekly to ensure optimum performance and wear life.
